A number of courses which are delivered by the University of Cumbria qualify you, on full completion of the course and the award of your qualification, to work in a professional role within certain occupations.

Examples of this type of course would be radiography, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery, social work and courses leading to the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Such courses usually contain a number of professional requirements and supervised work placements to ensure that you have the required knowledge within specific areas. These elements must be successfully completed prior to your full registration and admittance to the professional register of the relevant professional body.

Examples of professional bodies would be the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Progression and Reassessment

If you are studying on a course with professional body requirements you should make sure you are aware of any specific professional body requirements that might impact on progression and/or reassessment on your course.

If you are in any doubt please contact your course team or Personal Tutor.

  • Professional Registration

Following confirmation of award at the University Progression and Award Board (UPAB) the Assessment team notifies the relevant professional body in order to register you with them. We aim to do this as quickly as possible, and within four working weeks of you receiving confirmation of your award.

Your registration may be delayed if you do not inform professional bodies and or the University of a change in any of your personal details.

Please closely check that the name you have supplied to the professional body and to the University matches exactly as any mismatch between the names held by both organisations will cause a delay in registration.

You can update your details at any time via ICON.

  • Provisional Professional Registration (for students on courses leading to registration with the NMC)

Students on a course leading to a registration with the NMC i.e. Nursing/Midwifery will have their award confirmed with the NMC.

Once the University has confirmed your registration with the NMC you will be able to access your NMC PIN via ICON.

  • Provisional Professional Registration (for students on courses leading to QTS only)

Students on courses leading to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) are provisionally registered by the University with the National College for Teaching and Leadership within 28 days of the start of their course.

They will then receive a TRN (Teacher Reference Number) and are also subject to the requirements of the National College’s Teachers’ Standards which apply to trainees working towards QTS.

You will have been required to complete a Suitability Declaration to enable you to be provisionally registered during your admission to the course. The Suitability Declaration forms part of the provisional registration procedure.

  • Teacher Reference Number (TRN)

Students on courses leading to the award of QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) will receive a Teacher Reference Number (TRN).

This is currently provided electronically by the National College for Teaching and Leadership and uploaded to your student record.

You will be able to locate your TRN by logging into ICON, going to your ‘Home Page’ and then looking under the ‘Other Details’ section.
