The formal exam periods take place every January, May and August.

If you are required to sit a formal exam as part of your programme of study you will be sent an exam timetable approximately 2 - 4 weeks before the exam date.  If you are unsure if your assessments will take place as a formal exam please refer to your module tutor for more information.

Students who have additional requirements agreed as part of a formal SpLD plan, and who are known to the Disabilities Team, will be informed by email as to what arrangements have been made for youIf you have any queries regarding your arrangements, please contact the Disabilities Team at your Campus of study.

If you feel that you require consideration for a formal SpLD plan you must contact the Disabilities Team as soon as possible as we can not guarantee that this can be provided to support your exam period if you have not allowed sufficient time for assessment of your needs.

Applications for consideration of extenuating circumstances must be formally submitted in line with the Fit to Sit policy. See Extenuating Circumstances | MyCumbria for further information. NB; Having a condition or learning difference alone will not automatically result in a successful claim.

  • Alternative Assessments

For various reasons beyond their control, students may have difficulties with the assessment specified on a module and/or programme. Alterative assessment is designed to overcome these difficulties and accommodate the variety of learning needs of our students.

Adjustments to assessment for a student with a disability or on-going health condition may take one of two general forms :

    • change to the circumstances (or modification) under which the existing assessment is taken
    • providing an alternative form of assessment.

(NB: Both forms of adjustment may be referred to as an "alternative assessment")

For consideration of Alternative Assessment :

    • A student must have a disability support plan in place on commencement of the module.
    • If there is no agreed support plan is in place (it must be completed within 2 weeks after the start of the module) or there is an urgent change in circumstances the student must contact the Disability Services Team and the module leader in advance of the exam.
    • Once the requirements have been discussed with the Team there is to be a discussion with the Module leader and the relevant Head of Learning Teaching and Student experience for that institute for sign off and agreement.
    • Module Leader with discuss with the student  the agreed alternative and its requirements
    • Any agreements will be held on the student file in confidence with managed consent in line with the University of Cumbria current Students Privacy Notice

more information of the support available and how to access it can be found here
