Medical Clearance Check (also referred to as Occupational Health)

If the completion of a medical is a condition of your offer, you will be required to undertake a health assessment.  This will be via an on-line platform provided by our appointed Occupational Health provider, Industrial Diagnostics Company Limited (Latus Group).

It is important to complete these checks promptly so that your medical can be ‘cleared’ and there is no hold up to receiving your student finance or being fit for placement.  We allow students a maximum of 8 weeks to clear all Conditions of Registration.

Failure to complete all checks will result in you being de-registered from programme.

The Medical clearance is split into two main sections:

  1.  Fitness to Train (online questionnaire and if required follow-up appointments with Occupational Health)
  2.  Vaccination history

Vaccination/immunity level check Clinics (post Registration).

Part 1: Medical Questionnaire (fitness to train)

You will receive an email with a link to an online questionnaire which will be sent from no-reply@ohims.co.uk. Please complete the questionnaire immediately so that we can progress your medical clearance.

If any follow up appointments are required, Occupational Heath will contact you directly to arrange these.  Please ensure you attend these appointments.

Once Occupation Health confirm your fitness to train, your clearance check on the Applicant Portal will move to ‘PENDING’.

If this is the only outstanding admissions check then you will be confirmed as in attendance following registration with Student Finance but you will not be a fully registered student until you have fully completed all aspects of the medical.

Part 2: Vaccinations  (fitness for placement)

For applicants on Health courses, once your Fitness to Train Certificate has been obtained and cleared your Medical Clearance check will move to ‘Pending Check’.  You MUST complete all required vaccinations for your Medical Clearance to move to be passed. Depending on which Health course you are due to come on, you may require different vaccinations.

Applicants on Health courses will receive a further email from no-reply@ohims.co.uk regarding their vaccinations.  If you have previously had these vaccinations done, you should obtain evidence of your past vaccinations and follow the instructions in the email to provide these to our Occupational Health provider Industrial Diagnostics Company Limited (Latus Group).  Below are some examples of the kinds of vaccination evidence you may need to provide as part of your Medical Clearance Check.

  • Evidence of two MMR vaccines or blood test results showing immunity.
  • Understand history of Chicken pox or blood test results showing immunity.
  • Understand if you have had the BCG vaccine (TB). A scar may be visible.
  • Evidence of three Hepatitis B vaccinations and a blood test result showing immunity (not required for Social Work).
  • Further blood tests are required for some courses e.g. Paramedic and Midwifery courses.

Vaccination Session

If no evidence can be obtained and blood test results following registration report non/low immunity, additional vaccinations will be provided.

  • 2 MMR vaccines to be given 4 weeks apart.
  • 2 Varicella (Chicken pox virus) to be given 4 weeks apart.
  • Standard course of Hepatitis B vaccinations - 3 vaccines given over the course of 6 months.

You will only require two Hepatitis B doses before you can go on placement. This course requires a blood test to confirm immunity (after the 3rd dose).   The first dose will be given promptly after registration followed 4 weeks later with a second dose.  As long as you have had all required vaccines and two doses of the Hep B vaccine you will be ‘fit for placement’

  • Hepatitis B booster vaccines will be given if necessary (depending on the immunity result).

Vaccination Clinics will be arranged by our Occupational Health provider, Industrial Diagnostics Company Limited (Latus Group), and programmed into/around your timetable and will take place on campus.

Please note that even if you have provided Occupational Health with evidence you have had all the required vaccines they will still ask you to attend clinic so that they can take bloods to assess your immunity levels and provide boosters where required to ensure your and your patients safety.

Please be aware that if you are invited to attend one of our Vaccination Clinics, that your attendance is compulsory.  Failure to attend WILL result in delays with placements.

If you have any queries regarding your vaccinations, you can contact our Occupational Health provider Industrial Diagnostics Company Limited (Latus Group) directly phone on: 01530 239190 or by email at: ohuocstudent@LatusGroup.co.uk
