Frequently Asked Questions
-
I have a question about graduation, how can I get help?
-
What is the Alumni Association and how do I join?
“Alumni” refers to graduates. One graduate is an alumnus, and alumni is the plural term. The Alumni Association is how the University of Cumbria stays in touch with its graduates.
You are automatically a member when you graduate, so there is no need to sign up. You can find out more on our alumni webpages.
To make sure you continue to receive updates and opportunities, please keep your contact details up to date.
-
When will I receive my degree certificate?
Degree certificates and transcripts are not handed out at graduation ceremonies. Your certificates will posted to the home address you have registered with the university, 6-8 weeks after the publication of your results. Please make sure your contact details are up to date on ICON to ensure you receive it. For more information visit our assessment webpages.
What happens if I lose my degree certificate?
You will receive an official award certificate and transcript after graduation. These should be kept safely as they are important documents.
If needed in future, it may be possible to order a replacement certificate or transcript via our online store, although a fee applies. More information is available on our certificates and transcripts webpage.
-
Where can I get an academic reference?
If you need a reference, please contact programmeadmin@cumbria.ac.uk. Please include your student number and course details so the team can respond efficiently. References are tailored depending on your course and how long ago you studied.
-
Does the university keep copies of all my course work, dissertations and essays?
The University only retains student work for a limited period. It is your responsibility to keep copies of your work, including essays, dissertations, projects, and final submissions.
Make sure all important files and course materials are saved to a personal device or account before your access ends, as university systems and drives will no longer be available after you leave.
If you used PebblePad throughout your course, don’t forget to register for a free Alumni PebblePad account to take your existing work with you after graduation.
-
What happens if I lose touch with my classmates?
The aim of the Alumni Association is to keep you connected to Cumbria and each other. We hold a large database of all alumni and provided contact details are up to date and classmates have not opted out of receiving our communications we can put you back in touch (with permission).
We also help to organise reunion events, so if you are celebrating five, ten, twenty or even fifty years since graduation, get in touch with us at alumni@cumbria.ac.uk and we can help you reunite.

Do I get to keep my university login forever?
No. Twelve months after you complete your course, your student account will be disabled. This includes your email, Student Hub access, and all systems linked to your university login such as Teams, OneDrive, Blackboard, PebblePad, and LinkedIn Learning.
Please make sure you download and save anything you need before your account closes, as it cannot be recovered. More information is available on our student leaver account access webpage.
-
I’ve used my student email account to sign up for LinkedIn/Amazon/Canva/Spotify etc. Can I keep using it?
Twelve months from the date you complete your course your student account will be disabled. This includes your university student email address.
If you think you have signed up to a subscription service or social media account using your student email it is important you ACT NOW. Change this to a personal email address otherwise you risk losing access to this.

I keep getting emailed from somebody claiming to be doing a survey on behalf of the university, is this a scam?
Please ensure that you check the email carefully. This is likely to be the Graduate Outcomes Survey.
The Graduate Outcomes survey is an annual survey which captures the perspectives and current status of recent graduates. All graduates who complete a course at the University of Cumbria will be surveyed 15 months after they complete their studies. The Graduate Outcomes survey aims to help current and future students gain an insight into career destinations and development.
You will receive your survey invitation by email around 15 months after you complete your course.
