Health and Safety

When you're on placement, your placement provider is considered your employer. That means they are responsible for making sure you're safe, healthy, and treated fairly while you're working with them. Just like any other employee, you’re entitled to the same level of care and protection. The organisation hosting your placement is primarily responsible for meeting all legal health and safety requirements during your time there.

While you're on placement, you have the same health and safety responsibilities as any other employee in the workplace. This means you’re expected to:

  • Looking after your own health and safety, and making sure your actions don’t put others at risk.
  • Getting to know the health and safety policies and procedures at your placement area so you understand what’s expected.
  • Working with your placement provider to help them meet their legal health and safety duties.
  • Planning safe travel to and from your placement, including making sure your vehicle (if you're driving) meets all legal requirements.

Incident and Accident Reporting

The University of Cumbria has a legal responsibility to report certain types of accidents, injuries, or serious incidents that happen during work-related activities to the appropriate authorities.

It also needs to investigate and keep records of any accidents, dangerous situations, or cases of illness that are linked to university work. This helps make sure the university can learn from what happened and improve safety for everyone.

For further details on the University’s Health and Safety procedures, and to download an Accident report Form see Health and Safety Procedures.

Code of Conduct

There is an expectation that students will uphold the reputation of their chosen profession at all times, this includes their behaviour and conduct inside and outside of the University and placement area, including their personal life and appropriate use of mobile devices and social media. Students may also wish to familiarise themselves with the Social Media Guidance. Failure to do this may affect a student’s fitness to practise and ability to complete their programme.

Nursing and Midwifery students are also required to observe the Guidance for students on professional conduct which includes The Code for nurses and midwives along with the Good health, fitness to practise guidance.
