Welcome to the University of Cumbria. On this page you will find some frequently asked questions about the registration process.
In addition to these FAQs, as a new student, you will have been invited to a Microsoft Teams chat to ask any further questions you may have.
IT and computers
Q: How do I find my student email address?A: Once you have activated your UoC login you will have access to all our resources. Have you done this yet? If not go to: https://apps.cumbria.ac.uk/AccountActivation/
As part of this process, you’ll set up your university account password and once this is done, you’ll be able to use your student email address. Your student email uses your student number and will look something like this: S1234567@uni.cumbria.ac.uk

A: A member of staff in our IT Service Desk will be able to help with resetting this for you. You can email them on itservicedesk@cumbria.ac.uk or call 01228 888 888
After you reset this, make sure you register for the Password Reset Service, this will let you reset your password whenever you need to in the future without having to go through the IT Service Desk. You can do this here: Password Reset Service

A: We have a limited supply of laptops that can be borrowed for short periods from our libraries (Learning Gateway in Fusehill St). A number of our laptops have been out on longer term loan during the pandemic and we are in the process of recalling these and returning our stocks to full capacity.
We are offering a discount on purchasing refurbished laptops and desktops. You can find out more about this here: https://www.cumbria.ac.uk/student-life/facilities/it-facilities/ If you scroll down a way on the page, you’ll find the section called ‘Access to discounted refurbished laptops.’
You can also still access fixed computers that are available in the library.
Library
Q: When will I get my ID card/Cumbria Card? Can I pick it up on campus?A: The cards are being taken by your tutors to be given out when you are on campus. Anyone who has not yet uploaded a picture and therefore hasn't had a card printed will have their card sent out once they have sent a pic to library@cumbria.ac.uk
A: The libraries are open to students and staff Monday - Friday for socially distanced browsing and a 'click and collect' of reserved items. You can find out more about this service online here: Using the libraries

A: Yes. Once you’ve registered and the library is notified, they will set you up so you can get FREE postal loans. Your books will be posted out to you. You can either post them back to us, bring them back when you come on campus or drop them at the University Centre in Furness College.

Students can also join the Furness College library which holds books purchased by the University to support Nursing courses.
A: Yes. There are fixed computers available in the university libraries that you can use.
Once you have completed your registration, you will be able to discover open-access computer rooms via the Student Hub (see Campus maps and info)
A: Each module has its own reading list in the module’s Blackboard site. One of the tabs down the left hand side of the site is your reading list. Your reading list syncs with OneSearch so you can access ebooks and request print books directly from your reading list.
You can also search for a module reading list by heading to OneSearch (link below) and clicking on OneList under useful links

You will need your student email address and password in order to access Onesearch and ebooks.
FOLLOW UP TEXT: To look for ebooks you can either click into Onesearch from the Student Hub. Or you can you go to Blackboard and on to your module site and then the reading list link on the left-hand menu. This will give you a list of titles recommended by your tutor and some will be ebook versions.

To enrol onto Headstart, see the instructions here Head Start and enrol on the version of Head Start that is relevant to your level of study:
- Head Start to University for new undergraduate students
- Head Start to Apprenticeships for new degree apprentice students
- Head Start Plus for students undertaking an undergraduate course at levels 5 or 6
- Preparing for Postgraduate Study for students about to start a postgraduate course
You will need to click Don’t have an account? Create one now if you haven’t logged onto BlackBoard Open Education before. You can create your own log in details for this resource but we prefer you to use your university student number as your username so we can easily identify you in the system.
