  • Apprentice Care Leaver Funding Support

If you’re a care leaver aged 16-24 and haven’t yet informed us of this, please contact apprenticeships@cumbria.ac.uk to discuss your eligibility for a tax free £3,000 bursary to support you in the first year of your apprenticeship.

To be eligible for the £3000 bursary you must:

    • be aged under 25 at the time you start your apprenticeship
    • not have received the care leavers’ bursary before
    • meet the legal definition of a ‘care leaver’, as either an ‘eligible child’, a ‘relevant child’ or a ‘former relevant child’, as defined in ‘Legal definition of ‘care leaver’ – if you have been supported by a local authority leaving care personal advisor, it is likely you will meet this
    • provide us with written confirmation from your local authority. You should speak to your local authority personal adviser or social worker for advice on how to obtain confirmation from the local authority.

The bursary is paid directly to the University of Cumbria in 3 instalments, and then we will pay it directly to you within 30 days of us receiving it.

Please note that Tax and National Insurance contributions are not paid on the bursary, it is not treated as income in Universal Credit calculations, and there are no rules around what you can spend the bursary on.

The below payments are based on you remaining on programme, with no breaks in your learning:

    • Payment 1: after 30 days
    • Payment 2: after 120 days
    • Payment 3: after 300 days
