Due to sustained pressure from university libraries, research funders and other agencies publishers have made an increasing number of scholarly material (books, journals, conference papers) freely available online as Open Access materials. These materials have been peer reviewed, quality checked and the full text is available online.

BASE BASE provides more than 50 million documents from more than 2,900 sources. You can access the full texts of about 75% of the indexed documents. Cambridge University Press: Open Access
Access to CUP’s growing collection of full open access journals
CORE: COnnecting REpositories 20 million articles worldwide, including pre-publication version of journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and theses. You can limit your search to full text articles and if an article is peer reviewed this is specified. DeGruyter Open De Gruyter publishes a growing number of fully open access journals Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) A service that indexes and provides access to over 9800 peer reviewed Open Access journals and the articles in them. You can search by article, journal or browse by subject. OpenDOAR: the Directory of Open Access Repositories An authoritative directory of about 2500 open access repositories (research archives). You can search the directory or the contents of repositories. Contents may be research outcomes or pre-prints of journal articles and book chapters published by researchers. Digital Commons Network The Digital Commons Network brings together free, full-text scholarly articles from hundreds of universities and colleges worldwide Google Scholar Google Scholar picks up Open Access content from global repositories OAIster Catalogue of Open Access digital resources from collections worldwide. More than 30 million records from more than 1,500 contributors with links to full text where possible. Open Access Button A free plugin service that will search for an Open Access version of a paywalled publication. OpenDepot An open access repository to enable all academics worldwide to share in the benefits of open access exposure for their research outputs. Open Grey Open Grey provides open access to 700.000 bibliographical references of grey literature (paper) produced in Europe. Examples of grey (gray) literature include technical or research reports, doctoral dissertations, some conference papers, some official publications, and other types of grey literature. re3data By offering detailed information on more than 2,000 research data repositories, re3data has become the most comprehensive source of reference for research data infrastructures globally. ResearchGate A social networking site for academics. Good for making contact with authors and for finding articles for personal studies. Please note that not all articles uploaded here have been copyright cleared. SpringerOpen, launched in June 2010, includes Springer’s portfolio of 200+ peer-reviewed fully open access journals across all areas of science. Taylor & Francis Open Access Access to Taylor & Francis Group's growing collection of full open access journals Unpaywall Unpaywall is a free plugin for Chrome and Firefox that will search for an Open Access version of a paywalled publication.

Open Book Publishers Publisher providing free access to about 40 academic books, mainly in the Humanities and Social Sciences Open Textbook LIbrary Textbooks that have been funded, published, and licensed to be freely used, adapted, and distributed. These books have been reviewed by faculty from a variety of US colleges and universities to assess their quality. Project Gutenberg 45,000 free e-books. An American project which cannot publish any texts still in copyright. This generally means that the texts are taken from books published pre-1923. SpringerOpen Books

There is a good range of e-books which contain a lot of interactive material; the first chapter of all of them is free to read.
