  • 1:1 Career Appointments

    We offer one-to-one appointments online via Microsoft Teams and in person at most campuses - please check the bookings calendar on My Career Enriched for our availability.  

    Here are the different types of appointment we offer.  

    Careers advice and guidance 

    Book a careers appointment if you need help with:  

    • career planning and options with your degree  
    • postgraduate study 
    • finding work experience or a placement opportunity 
    • finding work 
    • writing a CV or application for a job or further study
    • getting prepared for an interview 

    Mock interviews 

    Improve your interview skills. A mock interview can help you prepare for a job or academic course interview. This will always be tailored to the specific job or course you are interviewing for and can be an invaluable 'test run' before the day. 

    Self-employment & Business Start Up Support 

    If you are considering starting your own business or side-hustle, book an appointment with our Enterprise Adviser to discuss your idea and get some information on how to take the next steps.  

     Our Student Enterprise Adviser can support you with: 

    • entrepreneurship  
    • freelancing  
    • growing your business 
    • becoming self-employed  
    • practical and financial support available locally 
    • idea development and any other questions you might have

  • Changing or Leaving Your Course

    Studying at university can be challenging, so it’s not unusual to be thinking about leaving or changing courses. Before you make any big decisions, take a step back, think it though and seek advice. Taking a break from your studies could be an option for example.

    Who can help?

    Speak to a Careers Adviser

    We are here to help you explore your options and signpost you to information and services you might find useful. To make an appointment click here.

    Speak to your Course or Personal Tutor

    Your course or personal tutor may be able to suggest things that can help if you are struggling with any aspect of your course.

    Speak to the Money Advice Service

    Talk to the University’s Money Advice Service to find out how your entitlement to funding may be affected leaving or changing your course. They may be able to provide information about hardship grants and funding if you are worried about money and continuing your studies.

    Speak to an Admissions Tutor

    If you want to change your course but remain at the University of Cumbria, speak to the admissions tutor for the course you want to join. Remember to ask about the content and structure of the course and find out if it would be a good fit for you.

    The Programme Administration offices (PAds) can provide you with further information and help with the processes involved in changing courses within the university. Contact PAd here.

    Speak to the Mental Health and Wellbeing Service 

    For counselling, psychotherapy and mental health support, self-refer for an appointment with a member of the Mental Health and Wellbeing team. Click here for more information: Mental Health and Wellbeing | MyCumbria 

    Speak to Admissions at Another University 

    If you want to leave your course and move to another university, speak to that university’s admissions office. Check whether it is possible to change courses, and if you meet their eligibility requirements. Remember to check whether your previous study will be considered, or whether you will need to make an application to start your degree again from the beginning.

  • Support for Graduates

    University of Cumbria graduates can access the Careers and Employability Service for up to three years after graduation. As well accessing our careers information resources, we can help you with finding work, completing applications, preparing for interviews and applying for postgraduate study. We can also advise you on how to set up your own business.  

    To access support, you’ll need to activate your graduate account on My Career Enriched.  You’ll receive an email from us when your course finishes explaining how to convert your student account.  

  • CV/Application/Letter Feedback

    CV, An image of a keyboard and a printed CVAre you struggling to perfect your CV or write a job application? The Careers Team can help you improve your application writing skills. Send us your draft job application, CV, covering letter, or postgraduate supporting statement and we will provide tailored feedback. 

    You’ll need to tell us what you want to use your application for and if applicable, include links to the opportunity you are applying to, including any job descriptions, person specifications or course details. This will enable us to give you tailored feedback.  

    Please note, we won’t proofread your drafts, but we will suggest ways you can improve the content.  You need to allow up to 5 working days for feedback .

  • Help Disclosing a Disability or Health Condition

    Finding suitable work and planning a career can be worrying for many students with a disability or health condition.

    The Careers Team can offer additional support and provide information, advice and guidance on accessing disability confident employers and voluntary organisations, disclosing your disability and requesting reasonable adjustments during the recruitment process and beyond.
