Details of known technical difficulties with specific eresources

  • How do I access online library resources?

    1. VIA ONESEARCH

You can search for library resources using the OneSearch discovery service.

    2. ERESOURCE A-Z & EBOOKS PAGES

If you know the eresources you wish to use you can go direct via our Eresources A-Z or the Ebooks collections list.

    3. VIA A WEB SEARCH ENGINE

If you know the name of the resource you can search for it in a web search engine such as Google Scholar. In Google Scholar you should use the "Settings | Library links" option to set the University of Cumbria as your library, this will help you access the content you need.

  • How do I login?

Before you access many library eresources you are required to prove you are a member of the University of Cumbria.

There two main methods of authentication both require your University of Cumbria email address and password:

    DIRECT LOGIN

Links to many eresources are configured to require you to login before accessing the material. You are taken directly to the university's login page.

This login requires you to enter your university email address and password.

    SHIBBOLETH or INSTITUTIONAL LOGIN

If you find an eresource via a web search engine such as Google Scholar, then you will not be automatically routed via our authentication system and will need to look for the 'institutional' login link. This login is also sometimes called the 'home organisation login' or 'shibboleth login' or 'UK Access Management Federation login'.

The steps involved vary for different eresources but in general:

    1. Select SHIBBOLETH or INSTITUTIONAL login link
    2. Select the UK Access Management Federation
    3. Select the University of Cumbria
    4. Login using your university email address and password

    INDIVIDUAL LOGINS

A small number of our resources require individual or specific logins. Contact the Library to obtain the login.

    EBSCOHOST

If you get stuck at the EBSCOhost Login screen follow these instructions.

  • Troubleshooting

IF USING ONESEARCH, HAVE YOU SIGNED IN?

If you are using OneSearch you should sign in to get the best experience.

IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR LOGIN?

Can you login into Blackboard? If you can then your login is working correctly. If you cannot login to Blackboard contact the IT Service Desk.

I DO NOT KNOW MY UNIVERSITY LOGIN

If you do not know your university email address and password contact the  .

DOES THE LIBRARY HAVE ACCESS TO THE ERESOURCE YOU REQUIRE?

If you are using the "Everything" search option in OneSearch you will get results for material the university library does not provide access to. If so, you can search for the title in Google Scholar to see if an open access copy is available.  Alternatively, for a small charge you can submit an Inter Library Loan request and we'll get a copy from the British Library.

If you are using the "Articles & more" option in OneSearch you should have access to ALL the search results. If you encounter a problem note down the citation (title, author, journal, year, volume, issue, pages) and use the Journal A-Z to navigate to the material. Alternatively, if you know which eresource in which the material is available you can access the eresource directly via the and perform your search again.

IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR PERSONAL DEVICE?

    a. Try another browser e.g. if you are using Internet Explorer (IE) try Firefox or Chrome, they can be for free.

    b. Clear your browser cookies or cache:

    c. Check you are not blocking pop-up windows - many electronic resources use pop-up windows where the resource generates a new browser window. Some browsers automatically block pop-up windows and this can cause problems with some resources, also some resources require plug-ins or extra software for your browser & if you block pop-ups you may miss the prompt to install particular software. Check your browser to see if you are blocking pop-ups, it should be easy to temporarily allow pop-ups when necessary or add the resource to your pop-up blocker. In IE Tools> Internet Options > Pop-Up Blocker Settings > Add the relevant website address.

    d. Check in your browser settings that JavaScript is not blocked/disabled

    e. If you use an Ad Blocker disable it for the site you are trying to access

    f. Check in the browser settings that cookies are not blocked
