  • Your library resources

Your library provides you with access to a wealth of electronic books and electronic journals as well as the print titles you can see on the shelves. Below is a list of learning resources and tools that the library subscribes to that will be useful for you when studying for your course.

    OneSearch

OneSearch is the single gateway to the Library's resources in both print and electronic form. You can use it to search for books, e-books, journals by title and physical items, such as CDs and DVDs. You can also use it to find journal articles, conference papers, reports and more.

    Online module reading list system

The Online Module Reading List System provides you with direct links to the books, articles, websites or scanned documents on your reading lists. You can search by keyword or your module title or code. If your module is missing please ask you tutor to contact their librarian.

    Subject resources pages

The subject resources pages are compiled for you by your librarians. The pages provide specific links to new print and ebook stock, journal article collections, news items and useful web links. The Subject resources pages also have links relating to information about postal loans, interlibrary loans and reciprocal borrowing schemes.

    ebook collections

There are thousands of alternative and up to date Education ebooks on OneSearch. For example, a search for teaching creativity returns over 300 ebooks.  Use OneSearch to find additional texts to those recommended on your suggested reading list. The best ebook collection for education is Dawsonera. However there are several other collections that are of value to you too.

    ejournal article collections

You can find journals articles using the articles & more tab in OneSearch. For more subject specific articles there are the individual ejournal article collections. For example:

    Discovery Education Espresso

Discovery Education Espresso is a video-rich, cross-curricular service suitable for education students and teachers working with F-Y6 pupils. This is a very useful resource for planning and delivering sessions for when you go on your placements. Ask at the library desk for the username and password.

    Scanned Chapters and Articles

For high demand books and articles that are only available in print, librarians and tutors will utilise the Library scanning service for book chapters and journal articles to embed in your Blackboard module site. These will often be added to your online reading list.

    Schools Library Service

You may access the Schools Library Service at Bethnal Green

The full address and a location map are available here

You can borrow a wide range of materials from the collection, including teaching practice materials covering all areas of the national curriculum.

Ask A Librarian – Out of Hours Service

From 5pm until 9am during the week and round the clock at weekends and Bank Holidays you can use our online Ask a Librarian service if you have any queries about library services, finding information, enquiries about referencing and searching information resources. At other times please use our contact details.

    Get More Books Campaign

Lecturers and librarians work closely together to buy the books you need for your assignments but we’d like you to have your say too. Use the Get More Books form to tell us what you need and we'll do our best to get it for the library collection.

  • Requesting Items

You can use OneSearch to find and then request items that are on loan to another user or are only available in another University of Cumbria library.

Requested items are delivered to the London library each week and you will receive an email confirming when your item is ready to collect.

  • Using other libraries

    SCONUL Access Scheme

The University is part of the SCONUL Access scheme which means you can access participating academic libraries in London and nationally, subject to certain criteria.

Ask in the Library for details or check here Look at the SCONUL Access webpage under member libraries for a list of participating libraries.

To join the scheme you will need to register online through the SCONUL website. You will be sent an introductory email to take to the library you wish to use. You will then need to follow their registration procedures. If you wish to join more than one library through the SCONUL scheme please print out the email for each library you want to join.

Students on extended placement can normally borrow through this scheme if the university concerned takes part; undergraduates with no extended placements in their programme are normally granted reference only access.
